Connecting Experience

Goal 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
The Sustainable Development Goals can only be met if we all work together. The world today is more interconnected than ever before, meaning that the time is now to partner up and help each other out.
Tasks
Negotiation Station
Wake up points
Age Group: 7+ | Amount of people: 6+ |
Time: 1 hour
Objective:
Understand how partnerships work between different organisations, to learn about negotiating.
Material:
3 different items (ex. 3 different colour pens) per team, papers with the task they have to do
Instructions:
- Divide the participants into small groups and give them 3 different items that they need to trade with other groups, and their group’s task.
- Only one participant per group, the negotiator, can talk with other groups, while the rest must stay with their items to talk with visiting negotiators.
- The negotiator must talk with other groups and try to trade items to help them to complete their task.
- The negotiator must then go back to their group and discuss with them if they think it is a good trade. If the entire group agrees, then the negotiator can return to the group they are trading with and exchange the agreed upon items.
- If the entire group does not agree, then the negotiator must return to the trading group and discuss a different exchange.
- The game is finished when all the groups have completed their tasks.
Example:
There are 3 teams, each team gets given randomly 3 papers (red, orange or blue) and one of the tasks:
- Team 1: You need to have only one colour
- Team 2: You need to have 3 orange and 1 blue
- Team 3: You need to have more blue than any other colour
So, for everyone to succeed the paper would need to be split at the end:
- Team 1: 2 red pages
- Team 2: 3 orange 1 blue
- Team 3: 2 blue 1 red
To make the game more difficult, you can have teams keep their task a secret.
Debrief:
- Was it difficult to work together when everyone had a different task?
- What way did you negotiate?
- What way do you think companies can work together to achieve the UN SDGs?
New Games New Rules
Wake up points
Age Group: 11+ | Amount of people: 6+ |
Time: 1 hour
Objective:
To learn about partnerships, and working together to achieve a goal.
Material:
Pens, paper, space to move around
Instructions:
Together, participants will create their own version of tag, or any other simple game your group enjoys. Tag is a game in which all players run around the space, with one player being on. The player who is on needs to touch another player, who will then be on.
Before you play, split the participants into small groups and have them come up with 3 rules for their new version of the game. Once each group has created their rules, they present them to the other groups.
Working together, participants will need to choose 3 or 4 rules they will use for the game, creating a version of the game they all think will be the most fun.
Once they’ve agreed on the rules they can play the game, depending on how well it goes they might decide to renegotiate the rules they’ve chosen.
When they’re happy they’ve created a fun game they could teach it to another group!
Debriefing:
- Was it difficult to find a game that everyone was happy with?
- What did you do to make sure every group had an equal say?
- What way do you think companies can work together to achieve the sustainable development goals?
Perfect Partners
Look around points
Age Group: 7+ | Amount of people: 4+ |
Time: 40 minutes
Objective:
To understand what a good partnership is and discover their own.
Material:
Pens and papers
Instructions:
Begin by talking to the group about strengths and weaknesses, how every person has both and that’s okay.
Give each participant a sheet of paper and have them write down what they think their strengths and weaknesses are, such as I’m a good listener, I’m good at telling stories, I arrive late, I am untidy etc.
Bring the group back together and discuss what the participants think they are strong and weak at. Other members of the group can suggest things to add to each other’s list. When everyone has finished their list, ask the group what they think is needed to create a good partnership. Explain that one of the most important things is finding someone who balances your strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you’re bad at concentrating, a good partner for you might be someone who is good at concentrating etc.
Give the group 10 minutes to find their perfect partner in the group, and then have them explain why they paired up with that person. Encourage the participants to choose based on strengths and weakness rather than picking their best friend!
Debrief:
- What do you think is a task that would be easier to complete with your new partner?
- Do you know any famous partnerships? What way do you think they were good/not good?
- What ways do you think groups or companies can work together to help the UN SDGs?
Working towards the goals
Look around points
Age Group: 11+ | Amount of people: 4+ |
Time: 45 minutes
Objective:
To discover different partnerships.
Material:
Internet/library access
Instructions:
In their patrols, have the participants pick one of the sustainable development goals to focus on. Set them the task of researching different partnerships that are associated with this goal, and what the different companies and organisations in these partnerships are doing to help achieve the goal.
When they have completed their research, have them think about the different companies and organisations in their area, is there anything they could be doing to help achieve the goal?
Have groups create a letter including steps they think the company or group could take to help and contact them. If possible, arrange a meeting to discuss in person the ideas they have.

Our SGDs
ACT points
Age Group: 11+ | Amount of people: 4+ |
Time: 30-40 minutes
Objective:
To work together for a more sustainable future
Material:
Pens and papers
Instructions:
As a group, sit down and evaluate your meetings. Are they sustainable? Equal? Are there ways they could be improved?
Together, create a set of achievable goals for the group to work towards in the next year. Think of small steps that will need to be taken throughout the year to achieve them.
Create pictograms for your goals and display them, along with the steps to achieve them, within your meeting place.
Create some criteria to check how well you’re doing and choose some meetings throughout the year where you can evaluate your progress.
